Welcome and thank you for choosing our Church for the baptism of your child. We shall be very glad to help you in the preparation for this important event in the life of your family.
In our Church, baptisms take place on the first and third Saturday of the month at noon.
Why do we Christians baptize?
After his resurrection and before he ascended to the Father, the Lord gathered his disciples one last time and said to them:
The Church baptizes because the Lord has commanded us to do so.
Who can be baptized?
Anyone who has faith and desires it: For adults seeking baptism, it involves a one year period of preparation and the reception of the Sacrament with the parish community at the vigil Mass of Easter on Holy Saturday night.
Parents who wish to have their children baptized: Unlike the case of adult baptism, this one depends not on the faith of the baby, of course, but rather on the faith of the parents. It is presumed therefore that the parents – or at least one of them – are practicing members of the Catholic community and that the child will be brought up on the practice of the faith. In fact, the parents solemnly promise to do this during the baptismal ceremony.
To arrange a baptism:
We require a copy of your child’s birth certificate in order to accurately register the baptism in our parish records.
If you live outside the parish we require a letter from your Parish Priest giving us permission to baptize your child in our parish.
Two members of our Baptismal Team will meet all parents on the First Tuesday of the month at 8.00 PM in the Parish Pastoral Centre beside the Church. A member of the team will contact you about this. The meeting gives us an opportunity to meet each other and to reflect together on the significance and implications of the baptism of your child. It also provides an opportunity to go through the ceremony together and to explain the various elements used in baptism.
It is very important to us that all parents who wish to have their children baptized into our community attend this meeting. We wish you every blessing in the years ahead and we look forward to welcoming you and your child into our Church.
